A little about us
We have been working for the older community in our town and surrounding area for the past 5 years and have six major activities:
Our Office - where people come in for a friendly chat and can be given the most up to date information regarding their rights, entitlements and grants that may be available. People receive help in filling in forms either in the office or at their homes.
Befriending Drogheda — a confidential visiting service where trained and vetted volunteers will visit people in their own homes to have a chat and ease loneliness and isolation.
Good Morning Drogheda — A free confidential telephone service whereby we phone people in the mornings to make sure that they are safe and well. To date we have over 100 clients and plans to increase this by December. Again the people making the calls are all older volunteers who live locally.
Care and Repair Program - A service for Senior Citizens to help with small repairs and maintenance jobs in their homes and gardens. We now have 19 volunteers and we carry out an average of 10 jobs a week. We also have a list of people we regard as trusted traders for larger jobs we cannot undertake.
Failte Isteach classes two evenings per week teaching conversational English to new immigrants again using older people as the teachers, we have 18 teachers and teach between 30 and 40 students per week.
Computer Classes — The classes are on a 1:1 basis and have been extremely successful. The student sets the pace and agenda, using email, Skype, face book and surfing the Internet are the most popular requests. To date we have 11 tutors and have so far trained over 300 students.
